COLOUR APPLICATION AND LIGHTING DESIGN

 

Synopsis

This course is designed for Spatial Design executives/designers looking to use more effective contemporary colour applications and lighting practices to add value to their design products. The acquired skills will enable the participant to develop a competitive edge, through a more informed and confident approach to using colour and lighting in interiors.

The program focuses on the use of colour and lighting in interior spatial design schemes.  Participants will learn how to introduce colour and lighting into a spatial design in a way that allows flexibility and experimentation.  Useful guidelines are provided that build confidence and encourage the freedom to create newly-inspired applications and combinations. 

 

Participants will be introduced to the importance of lighting in an interior space, the various design possibilities and the new skill-set required to build flexibility into their lighting services proposals.  Participants will gain a new knowledge of the effects of lighting and ambience creation including a consideration of both the functional aspects as well as the aesthetic values. For colour applications, participants will investigate the history and the psychology of colour to discover how to use colour as their most potent and flexible contemporary element of Interior Spatial Design.

 

Particular emphasis is given to underlying design approaches, philosophies, constraints, influences and areas of innovation.

To enable designers to understand the various strategies of colour application and lighting practices in interior spatial projects, thereby deploying these tools effectively and creatively to be a successful designer. 

 

To provide designers with a new understanding of the various strategies of colour application and lighting practices in interior spatial projects, thereby enabling the effective and creative deployment of these tools to enhance the appeal of their designs.

Learning Objectives

Participants who successfully complete the program will be able to:

 

  • Identify the physical, psychological, emotional, social and cultural responses to colour appropriate to interior design.

  • Use appropriate colour theories to visually control and create illusions that help enhance or subdue residential interiors.

  • Apply the properties and characteristics of colours taking into consideration the effects of natural and artificial lighting in a self identified residential interior design scheme.

  • Understand the different types of lighting, their directional purposes and their effect upon the ambience of an interior space. 

  • Learn how to use the properties of light and the orientation of a space to renovate a residential project.

  • Learn how light affects colour, fabrics, surfaces and so many of the decisions needed to make a successful interior design.

  • Learn about the properties of various forms of artificial light, and the technical and aesthetic possibilities they offer ambient, decorative and task lighting.
